Reddit is the most-cited domain in Google's AI Overviews
We pulled 97 sales-related SERPs. 95 had an AI Overview, and Reddit was cited more often than Salesforce and HubSpot combined.
How we know this
- Sample
- 97 SERPs, 90 AI Overviews, 2,320 autocomplete suggestions
- Method
- Google autocomplete expansion from 25 seed terms, plus one page of Google results per query for 97 sales-related queries, capturing organic results, People Also Ask, and AI Overview sources. US, English, desktop.
- Cost
- $1.41
- Published
What this cannot tell you
- · Autocomplete gives query language and relative ordering, not search volume. Nothing here supports a 'searches per month' claim.
- · Winnability is a proxy: it counts forum results ranking (weak incumbent) against big-vendor domains ranking (strong incumbent). No domain-authority data was purchased.
- · A single snapshot on one day, US/English/desktop, one page of results per query. AI Overviews in particular vary between users and sessions.
What we did
We took 97 queries that B2B sales teams plausibly search, pulled one page of Google results for each, and recorded what the AI Overview cited. Separately we expanded 25 seed phrases through Google autocomplete to see what language people actually type.
1. Zero-click is the default, not the exception
95 of 97 SERPs carried an AI Overview. Only two did not: “leads falling through the cracks” and “ai sdr”.
If you are planning content around clicks, you are planning around the 2% case. The question is no longer whether you rank. It is whether you are the thing being summarised.
2. Reddit is cited more than Salesforce and HubSpot combined
Across the 90 AI Overviews that exposed their sources:
| Domain | Citations |
|---|---|
| reddit.com | 22 |
| youtube.com | 17 |
| linkedin.com | 11 |
| salesforce.com | 9 |
| pipeline.zoominfo.com | 8 |
| hubspot.com | 5 |
Two user-generated platforms occupy the top three positions. For a category where every vendor runs a content team, that is a striking allocation of trust, and it means a forum thread can outrank a decade of corporate blogging as an input to the answer people actually read.
3. Search language and practitioner language are different lists
We had separately read 1,157 posts from sales practitioners. Comparing the two:
| Phrase | Autocomplete variants | Mentions in 1,157 practitioner posts |
|---|---|---|
| speed to lead | 84 | 0 |
| lead routing | 31 | several |
| leads falling through the cracks | 22 | several |
| pre-call research | 0 | 8, across 5 subreddits |
Both extremes are traps.
“Speed to lead” has heavy search demand and near-zero organic practitioner usage. and roughly half its search intent turns out to be real-estate investors buying leads, not B2B sales teams. The top organic result is a motivated-seller lead vendor.
“Pre-call research” is the inverse: the single most repeated automatable complaint we found in practitioner discussion, and zero autocomplete suggestions.
The rule we now work to: what people discuss tells you what to build. What people search tells you what to write. They are not the same list, and using either alone produces a predictable mistake. We made both versions of that mistake before noticing.
4. The winnable queries are the ones that sound like problems
Winnability splits cleanly.
Vendor-owned, effectively unwinnable for a small site, the category head terms:
lead routing · sales automation · lead scoring model · mql vs sql ·
sales pipeline visibility · best sales engagement platform
Winnable, because forums rank and no vendor owns the answer:
why are my leads not converting · leads falling through the cracks ·
demo no show rate · how to reduce demo no shows · cold email spam folder fix ·
how many follow ups before giving up · what is a good cold email reply rate ·
why is my sales forecast wrong · will ai replace sdrs
The pattern: abstract category nouns are owned; specific problem sentences are not. When a forum thread is ranking, it means no one has published a better answer, which is an invitation rather than a barrier.
What we take from this
- Optimise to be cited, not clicked. Answer first, state your numbers, show your sample size, attribute cleanly.
- Participating honestly on Reddit is, measurably, a more effective channel than publishing on your own domain, at least at the start. Disclose who you are; astroturfing the exact channel we criticised would be indefensible.
- Judge this kind of content by citations and direct visits, not sessions. The traffic number will understate it.
