Will AI replace SDRs?

Not the role, on the evidence so far. AI is taking the tasks around it: research and first drafts. The shape of the team has not moved. In Bridge Group's 2025 survey of 351 companies, the SDR to AE ratio held where it has been since 2018, and AI SDRs showed up in 1% of respondents.

The short version

Ask about the job and the evidence says no, not yet. Ask about the tasks and the answer is yes, and it has already started.

An SDR does three kinds of work. They find and research accounts. They write and send the first touch. They hold a conversation with a stranger and turn it into a meeting. The evidence so far says AI can take over the first two. We found nothing that shows it doing the third as well as a person.

What is changing: the tasks

Research is the clearest case. Gartner forecasts that by 2027, 95% of seller research workflows will begin with AI, up from less than 20% in 2024.

Our own corpus points the same way. Pre-call research was the most repeated automatable complaint in 1,157 practitioner posts, and one RevOps thread asked it plainly:

“How much time do your SDRs spend on researching leads?”

What is not changing yet: the role

The Bridge Group has surveyed SDR teams for ten editions. In 2025 the SDR to AE ratio sat at 1 to 2.4, where it has been since 2018. AI SDRs showed up as their own category for the first time, at 1% of respondents.

The job is getting harder, not smaller. Only 60% of SDRs hit quota, the lowest in the study’s history. Pipeline per SDR rose from $2.83M to $3.78M, but the report puts that down to bigger deals, not more meetings.

Why the forecasts sound bigger than they are

Gartner expects AI agents to outnumber sellers ten to one by 2028. The same release expects fewer than 40% of sellers to say those agents made them more productive. More agents and more activity do not add up to more pipeline on their own.

Salesforce reports that 54% of sellers have used agents and 48% lack the bandwidth for adequate cold outreach. Salesforce sells agents, so read those as a vendor’s numbers. Even so, the second figure describes a shortage of people, not a surplus.

What we would do with this

Give AI the research and the first draft. Keep a person on the conversation, and measure meetings held, not emails sent. That is why our related tool builds the research brief and leaves the call to you.

  • · We found no SDR headcount series we trust. The Bridge Group ratio shows the shape of a team, not how many SDR jobs exist in the market.
  • · Both Gartner figures are forecasts, not measurements. Counting agents tells you little about whether any one agent does a person's job.
  • · Our Reddit corpus has no cluster of posts on AI replacing SDRs, so we cannot report what practitioners think about this question. It only tells us which tasks they want gone.
  • · A 1% figure from a survey run in 2024 and 2025 may already be out of date. Adoption in this category moves fast.
